Although the Petticoat is a historic garment most popular in the 1600s it is surprisingly still used today. Maybe it is not worn in the traditional fashion that it was once meant to be worn in, but it still serves the intended purpose.
The Petticoat is an undergarment that is meant to shape the figure of a dress in a specific way that it is intended. Examples of what these garments are supposed to do can be seen in portraits of the queens and women of high status during the sixteen, seventeen and eighteen hundreds. The Petticoat is a puffy underskirt that varies in volume depending on the style and shape of the dress that it is being worn with. The ends of the skirt were usually decorated with lacing or ruffles as they would sometimes be visible at the edge of the dress. Even then, these undergarments were very conservative and did not reveal much.
Today, one of the most popular uses for the Petticoat is for Halloween costumes. The idea remains the same, it is an undergarment meant to fill the shape of a skirt or dress but what is significantly different is the length of the dress. Modern fashion is something that would clearly shock and appall Queen Victoria, the idea of a miniskirt in those times was not favorable to women. But today, Petticoats used during Halloween are just a few inches long and they are almost on full display. Make your Halloween Costume sexier with one of these modern day Petticoat. The queen may not approve it but who cares? She’s not around to say anything anyway.
