The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a team of four orphaned turtles named after the four famous Renaissance artists, Leonardo da Vinci, Donato di Niccol? di Betto Bardi, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino and Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti. According to the comic book, the turtles were dropped into a sewer by a little boy and later discovered by Sensei Master Splinter who would teach them the ways of the art of ninjutsu and take them under his wing. Both the turtles and Master Splinter acquired their anthropomorphic abilities from a green goo that spewed into the sewer shortly after the turtles fell in. The rest is history.
