Animals have coexisted with humans since the dawn of time. In fact, animals were here long before we ever were. The first animal to be domesticated by humans was the dog, which in present day is referred to as “a man’s best friend”. Subsequently, humans continued to domesticate animals and today they are a vital and integral part of our culture. We use animals not only for food, but also for companionship, agriculture and we learn from them each and every day.
Native Americans held animals in very high regard and believed that they had rights that should be respected just as well as those of humans. Native Americans hunted only what they needed to eat and asked permission of the animal’s spirit before killing. With the arrival of European settlers in the 15th century, Native Americans were introduced to many different types of animals such as horses, donkeys, mules, pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, chickens, large dogs, cats and bees, and different ways of using these animals for agricultural, transportation and other necessities.
