If you have experienced either of these events, you know you’ll have a tough time deciding where the best costumes in South Beach are. On one hand, the Florida Supercon’s costumes are pure genius. Fanatical cosplayers from all over South Florida wait all year for the chance to show off their DIY creations that look far from the work of an amateur costumer. The Miami Beach Convention Center is the place where these folks gather to mingle with fellow cosplayers and interact with their favorite comic book, movie and TV heroes. Needless to say, they all aim to impress, so the work that goes into creating these incredible outfits puts them high when ranking costumes in South Beach. However, Halloween in South Beach is something special. Miami Beach costumes are defined by the glamorous nightlife; thousands of South Floridians and even tourists flood the streets of South Beach come October 31st to create a spectacular show of costumes that range from absolutely terrifying to hilarious. South Beach Halloweeners pay a pretty penny to obtain a look that turns heads. Of course, the club scene has a lot to do with it since most people end up dancing the night away at Miami Beach’s most popular hot spots.
What Do Both Events Have in Common?

Well, it is established that both events are held in South Beach (obviously), they both call for over-the-top costumes, and it is only natural to assume that some of the same cosplayers that attend the Florida Supercon take advantage on Halloween to showcase their creations once again in South Beach. Sexiness is also a huge factor for both. Sexy costumes are definitely present at both events as they provide ladies with an opportunity to show off more than costuming skills. They are definitely attention-grabbers and it works well for both events since it is ultimately what costumed attendees aim to do. Not to mention, the sexy theme definitely plays perfectly in South Beach.
But aside from that, both events attract people from all areas of South Florida and even out-of-towners visit Miami Beach just to be present at these costume events. So what is the main thing that both events have in common? They both attract people that: (A) have a lot of money, (B) are talented, crafty and ingenious with costuming, or (C) are fanatical enough to have a good time as spectators but not motivated, talented or wealthy enough to participate—and these are the folks the involved costumers live to impress. However, there are cosplayers who would be offended if they were told their DIY creations would make excellent Halloween costumes. Halloween is so mainstream and people who celebrate it often lack the artistic integrity of a cosplayer. Likewise, a South Beach Halloween party animal may feel too cool to attend one of those “geek events.” Maybe the contrast is that both groups take themselves very seriously in the context of their cause and that in itself is a similarity. So, how could two events that are all about costumes in South Beach seem so similar and be so different?
Differences Between Cosplayers and Halloweeners
Goals: This is what differentiates the committed cosplayers that attend the Florida Supercon and the casual Halloween passersby who merely experiment with costumes once a year. Cosplayers are fans of costuming and characters first, then comes the glitz and glamour. They take costuming personal and have a deep connection with the characters they portray. They are willing to dress up any time of the year. Casual Halloween fans are not committed costumers. These are the folks that may or may not dress up and their decision may be based upon the ability to attend a Halloween party in South Beach—since it is the most popular Halloween hot-spot. Even deciding what costume to wear can be a last minute decision while a cosplayer often takes weeks, even months, preparing for the Florida Supercon.
Both Events are Equally Special
Florida Supercon vs Halloween: Both events are not necessarily special to everyone but they are to each crowd. The Supercon crowd is looking for a way to express their creativity, fandom and passion for costumes. The Halloween crowd is looking for a way to get away from the everyday routine and live as someone else for at least one day. South Beach is definitely the destination for both and while it is hard to come to a consensus on which event has the best costumes, it is not hard to see that, overall, South Florida’s best costumes can be found in South Beach.
