Lego Batman Costume: Best Batman Suit This Halloween?
To save you from the suspense the titular question has stirred up, let me start our discussion with the answer: yes, I do firmly believe the Lego Batman costume will be the Batman costume to beat this year.
I know what you're thinking: How can a puny 1.5 inch plastic Batman take on a 6 foot 4 Batman (or one of the more reasonably sized non-Affleck Batmen) and win, even if in the costume department?
Oh, that's what we're here for.Warner/DC
The Lego Batman Movie is a triumph if there ever was.
Going by the box office numbers, critical acclaim and word of mouth, I'm gonna assume you've seen The Lego Batman Movie already (and if you haven't, you should rush to a theater immediately), so you're probably already readying your wallet to get those sweet, sweet Lego costumes for yourself and everyone you know of, and that begs the question, what is it about the film that's causing people to go ga-ga over it?
Is it just the costumes? The appeal? Or something else entirely?
The reasons are simpler to list than they'd seem.1. The Inherent Appeal Warner/DC
Batman's entire life under the scanner through a Lego lens? Yep, count me in.
With how popular Legos have been throughout history, it's safe to assume everyone has come in contact with them at some point in their life.
And with how popular Batman has proven in pop culture, it's even safer to assume you've seen and loved at least one, if not all, of his iterations.
What do you get when you combine a dark and brooding costumed vigilante with connectable mini blocks?
Exactly, instant appeal right there, boom.
To be fair to The Lego Movie, it had this boffo idea first, and with how successful it proved, and how popular its version of Batman proved (seriously, in the pre-Batfleck era, the Lego Batman costume sold almost as well as the Michael Keaton Batman costume, and way ahead of the Adam West Batman costume), it was a guarantee that The Lego Batman Movie would be a decent entertainer if nothing more, and once the trailers and clips started pouring in, people were assured this spin-off didn't exist just to sell more toys and costumes, but because the people connected with it genuinely wanted to make this movie.
Once you've got that image into the potential audience's heads, your appeal is sealed.2. It Looks Gorgeous Warner/DC
It's not possible to ever love this Joker enough.
I will never cease to be amazed at how far modern animation has come. Disney's buttery smooth animation might be a thing of beauty, but what Warner Animation Group achieved with The Lego Movie, making an entirely CGed film look like it was done using stop motion, was truly remarkable.
And coupled with the bright and vivid colors and character designs, you had the perfect base for toys, costumes and accessories.
Thankfully, The Lego Batman Movie takes all of that and cranks it up to 11. As much as I love Burton's films and his Goth aesthetic when it comes to the costumes and the world in general (seriously, dude put the Goth in Gotham), or as much as I appreciate the realism Nolan's world and Batman costume brought, (and not to forget, the Snyder-ness of Ben Affleck's costume and world), they are simply no match for the manic, over the top nature of the costumes and the world that Lego brings. One look at the Lego Joker and his costume, and you'd forget whatever that thing in Suicide Squad was.
That extends to everyone! Everyone has a unique look, so meticulously crafted, from Alfred's butler costume with its exaggerated tails, to the costumes the minor characters wear, it's hard not to be captivated by the beauty of the film.3. It's Just a Really, Really Great FilmWarner/DC
Mic drop worthy indeed!
Look, you've probably heard this a billion times how dope The Lego Batman Movie is and how it's the best Batman film since The Dark Knight and whatever, but see, here's the thing: it's true, all of it.
Like I said, the people involved in this movie really, really wanted to make a good and unique movie, that wasn't just a showreel for costumes and toys, and it shows. Batman's film history has been slightly chequered lately, with The Dark Knight Rises proving a bit divisive, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice...well, you know how that went. With the disillusion that had set in with people regarding Batman as a character and the overly serious treatment he had been getting, it was time for a change.
And The Lego Batman Movie brought it.
The film takes a more Deadpool approach (with a more sanitized approach, thank God) and is more than happy to skewer Batman for his overly lugubrious bearings, but I swear to God, it's the most accurate representation of Batman ever to grace the screens.
These are still the same characters, with the same costumes, and the same personalities that you've grown to love, but it takes a more self-deprecating approach towards the darkness and the worst of tendenices, and that really allows the film to fly.
You think Robin's pants-less costume is weird? Yeah, the movie rips it apart. You think Tom Hardy's voice was indecipherable as Bane? Yeah, that's ripped apart too.
And that's not all, the film is a Batfan's delight with all the Easter Eggs, from the various Batman costumes to the countless nods to Batman's history, the rewatch value is tremendous, and with how funny and touching the film actually is, you'll want to.Once you think of the film that way, it's really not that hard to imagine why the Lego Batman costume outshine every other Batman costume this Halloween.
I've repeatedly stressed how the best of costumes fail to fly off their shelves if the characters they belong to aren't worthy of the said costume, especially if the film they're a part of isn't that much better either, and The Lego Batman Movie takes all those worries and tosses them out the window with how confident, assured and magnificent it is.
The character work is as solid as it's ever been, and every character has been done justice and given their moment (you can finally get that Alfred costume you've wanted to, or even that Orca costume or Condiment King costume for that matter, but were worried nobody knew about it).
And I've already mentioned how the design is on point, with every character and their costume feeling distinct and well thought out (plus not to mention cute, given their Lego-ization - seriously, Lego Joker is the thing!) and these things count for more than you'd imagine.
So yes, I'd highly recommend you start making a list of all the Lego Batman Movie costumes you'd like you and your loved ones to be kitted out in and take on he villain costume wearing contingent, because if you don't hurry, you'd miss out on. them, and hey, you don't want that now, do you?
