It’s summer, and that can only mean one thing – fan convention season is back! For self-proclaimed geeks and lovers of comic books, anime, and video games, conventions (or simply “cons”) are the pinnacle of fandom. With all of the newest film, comic book, and video game releases out and about, fans are all too eager to head on over to their local convention centers for a chance to meet their favorite stars and dress in their best cosplay renditions of their favorite characters. South Florida’s very own Supercon, held annually at the Miami Beach Convention Center, is a star-studded event in its own right, enough to rival the infamous San Diego Comic-Con International.

Ever wish you could just go back to being a care-free child without a worry in the world, if at least for one day?  Disney-Pixar movies have a way of helping adults disconnect from everyday stressors while still reminding us that they [stressors] are just a normal part of life.  In the Halloween world, the same elements are at play.  Pixar movie costumes offer a temporary escape from the monotonous rat race routine that most adults experience.  Being an adult is hard and sometimes it is necessary to have distractions that take us away (mentally) from our problems.  Pixar movie costumes appeal to adult Disney fans because their films explore subjects that, while intended for children, still speak loud and clear to a grown up audience that strongly identifies with their struggles and victories.  Dressing up in a costume from a Pixar flick is a way of expressing your thoughts through the character’s own because you can identify.

Does anyone know the answer?  If you search for a Homestead costume shop on the web, you are going to see almost anything but.  You’re going to see department stores that don’t specialize in costumes, seasonal shops that close down indefinitely and even a store that specializes in costumes for guinea pigs!  Maybe it depends what time of the year you search for costumes in Homestead but even during the Halloween season the results are slim.  If you don’t know any better, you are going to end up somewhere near downtown Miami because that is where the closest specialty costume store is in proximity to Homestead.  Or is it?  Well, surprise!  That is far from the truth.  There is a place much closer to Homestead that specializes in costumes: Wonder Costumes.

It’s hard to tune out the noise during Halloween in Miami.  Endless review sites and paid event promoters create special guides to tell you the “the top things to do in Miami during Halloween.”  In the end they have a special interest to deliver for their client (or audience), so—regardless of how big or small the event is—they clutter their “Miami Halloween event calendars” with “Halloween happy hour” at pretty much every bar in Miami and drop a few gems here and there of actual relevant content.  What you are most likely looking for is a real, fun and unique Halloween experience; maybe even one that you can consider year after year or one that you can recommend to your friends visiting from out of town as guaranteed Halloween fun in Miami.  Well, needless to say, bogo drinks at xyz bar are not necessarily here to stay--and it’s likely that xyz bar is not either.  Plus, some of these sites forget that searchers may want to find events that they can attend with their families, so family friendly events are a must for a site that recommends Halloween events.  We’ve come up with a nice list of things to do and places to go during Halloween in Miami that include something for everyone along with transportation tips to help you get there sooner.  These are established South Florida Halloween events that aren’t going anywhere and if they ever do, we’ll remove them ;-)

Start typing ‘costumes allowed’ in your search bar and Google will auto-complete with ‘at Disneyland’.  It’s a popular search term because Disney Parks implemented a strict costume policy a few years ago (for security purposes) that does not allow anyone 14 and over to dress up.  This is a total bummer for loyal fans who enjoy dressing up with the whole family at Disney theme parks.  It all started because some guests were cosplaying Disney characters so well at their theme parks that other visitors were mistaking them for staff members and even asked to have their picture taken.  Some of our official Disney costumes are THAT GOOD!  But that doesn’t fly at Disney parks; they quickly solved the issue with this policy affecting teens and adults, and even restricted certain types of costumes, masks and accessories for kids under 14 at their theme parks.  This is kind of unfair because not everyone visiting Disney is a professional cosplayer, but we all have to pay the consequences of superb costuming.  However, there is good news!  What some people may not know is that Disney makes a special exception during one time of the year: Halloween!  Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is the one time that guests over 14 can dress up to enter Disney parks.  Just don’t go too crazy; even though Disney bends their costume policy a bit in October, it does not mean that you can show up in any costume you want.
