Generic Superhero Costumes for Halloween, Why Not?

Marvel and DC comics have completely taken over the superhero category in the Halloween industry leaving very little room for generic superhero costumes.  Even within each company’s fictional comic book universe, only a handful—out of thousands—of branded superheroes “makes it big.”   DC clearly capitalizes on Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, their respective villains and maybe a few other characters, but most never leave the comic book/animated realm.  Marvel has managed to take it a bit further through films like The Avengers and the X-Men franchise which allow for an expanded cast to be featured as costumes, but even then, that is only a tiny fraction of the total characters within each universe.  So in costumes, all we get is the usual recurring stars, and even though superhero costumes are probably the most sought after Halloween outfits year after year, it can get monotonous seeing 50+ different renditions of Spider-Man in a 5 year span. 

It’s tough trying to be truly original on Halloween if you aim to dress up as a comic book character, but a generic superhero costume may be just the answer to the lackluster pattern of Halloween trends.  The Huffington Post event has a whole section on their site dedicated to articles that promote creative Halloween costumes.  There is no shame in separating yourself from the heavily commercialized superhero genre as presented by the comic book movie industry.  There are many generic superhero costumes available that don’t have any ties to major franchises and still make you look just as— if not more—heroic than the regurgitated pop culture driven trends.  Another great benefit is that, like in medicine, generic simply means that it gets the job done without you getting suckered into paying high prices for the same results.  At the end, all you really want out of your costume is that it makes you look good, feel cool and if you are daring enough, be original.  We put together a list of generic costumes that do all these things.  If you are considering going into uncharted territory this Halloween, here are some costumes that will help you become a hero without corporate ties.
