Even though finding matching outfits is not a difficult task, we decided to share a few creative ideas for couples’ costumes based on 2016 trends.  Even though our ‘couples’ category, for instance, features ready-made corresponding costumes, there are endless options throughout the site that make excellent outfits to pair up with others.  They can be funny, raunchy, or even serious.  Couples costumes are not just limited to the walking-with-hands-in-each-other’s-back-pocket type of love birds; they can also express matching sense of humor, fandom, political affiliation, and similar interests between friends and relatives.  This is where creativity plays a role.

Food themed couples costumes are definitely classic ideas and probably among the most popular ones.  This is a safe option when attending an event that is family-oriented since the theme is pretty safe, but again, you are likely to encounter many other folks with similar food costumes.  To make it interesting and original, you may want to try to mix and match individually sold outfits that can be paired up with others to make a unique “dish.”  For example, pair up drinks with food outfits like a cheese slice with a wine bottle costume or pay tribute to rapper Ludacris with a chicken and beer combo.  You may also mix and match endless possibilities with fruit and vegetable costumes, which make excellent group costume ideas by the way.

You can never go wrong with classic themed costumes!  After all, there is an obvious reason why they are classics.  Couples costumes such those in the image above are ever so popular.  The classic Munsters costumes, for example, were a hit in the 60s, but Herman and Lily Munster take after immortal Halloween themed characters—Frankenstein and Dracula—that are impossible to debunk as the most prominent of all time.  And who could deny Adam and Even the status of classics?  They have been popular from the dawn of man, literally!  Couples costumes are way better when they have special meaning, and the classics always seem to have just that.  Dress up as a couple of tacky tourists or the corresponding king and queen in a deck of cards; classic couples’ costumes are a safe option.

Supercouples: Superheroes and Villains

Supercouples are favorites among comic lovers and movie buffs.  While superheroes often have mere mortal love interests, it would not make sense to include those in our list as they would cancel out the title of “super” couple.  Because of that, we are pairing up each male superhero with his/her female equivalent—Superman and Supergirl, Batman and Batgirl, Spider-Man and Spidergirl, etc.—even if those are not necessarily romantic couples in the comics and movies.  Likewise, we are pairing up related characters from their respective universes, like Wonder Woman with Superman, Batman or Aquaman, for example.

Batman v. Superman

Batman v. Superman was the most long-awaited superhero feature of 2016.  Unfortunately, there was a lot of disappointment for DC fans because the movie did not live up to its expectations.  However, that did not affect the popularity of costumes from the movie.  The introduction of a new Batman and Superman universe and the big screen debut of Wonder Woman and Aquaman, make Batman v. Superman costumes a force to be reckoned with.  This line-up creates various possibilities for superhero couples costumes based on the movie.

Captain America: Civil War 

DC was not the only major comic book franchise to release a movie that would make for instant hit costumes on Halloween.  Marvel’s obvious opponent to Batman v. Superman was Captain America: Civil War.  No need to mention how popular Captain America, Iron man and Black Panther are, but Black Widow seems to be the only female character whose costume has been a Halloween icon.  For Civil War couples costume ideas, you may have to stick to female versions of the main characters, even if they are not pre-existing characters like Superwoman or Batgirl.

Deadpool Ideas

There is only one Deadpool, no girl version.  Except in the costume world; Deadpool costumes also break the 4th wall with in-your-face incarnations of Deadpool as a female in skimpy mini-dress or fully suited in the red and black bodysuit.  These women’s Deadpool outfits are perfect couple’s costumes when paired up with the original men’s version.  There is also an easy to wear pair for those couples who are not fully committed to the whole dress-up thing—a hoodie for men and that mini-dress we talked about earlier.

Harley Quinn and Joker 

Harley Quinn and the Joker are probably the most liked super-villain couples in comic books and movies.  Naturally, they are also one of the most popular cosplayed couples as well.  After the release of Suicide Squad, the Margot Robbie and Jared Leto rendition of this villain couple made cosplayers take their fandom to a new level.  Not only have the “Damaged” Joker and “Daddy’s Little Monster” Harley Quinn had incessant appearances at comic conventions, but fans have reincarnated the classic versions of the two as well.  You can see some of the most popular versions of the Joker and Harley in our Batman collection (and of course, the image above).

Suicide Squad

Harley Quinn and the Joker got their own feature in our list because they are undeniably one of the most popular villain couples.  However, we would not have even mentioned them if it wasn’t for the recent revival of the characters in DC/Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad.  Aside from Harley and Joker, Suicide Squad introduced other characters that will make awesome couples costume ideas for this year.  You can pair up Katana with Deadshot or Killer Croc, Harley Quinn with Deadshot or Joker with Katana.  While no relationship bond is as strong as Harley and her puddin’, these other Suicide Squad couples will still be a hit. 

Movie Couples Costumes 

Nothing like a good movie to inspire couples costume ideas.  With hundreds of new movies every year and protagonists with love interests as supporting cast, Hollywood never disappoints Halloween couples.  Lovable couples from films like The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay and Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass are default options this year, but any movie can make the cut.  Even Transformers costumes are available for men and women.  Check out some other movie couples costumes that will be in high demand this year.

Star Wars

This is no surprise; Star Wars costumes are extremely popular every year, so the movies’ couples costumes make the list by default.  Star Wars films have some of the most iconic pairs in sci-fi film history, though they are not all relationships of romantic nature.  Starting with the original duo from the 1977 epic (not original in terms of story chronology), Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, were the heroic twin siblings that helped shape the popularity of the franchise.  Luke and Leia costumes are perfect for friends and siblings because a romantic couple portraying themselves as bro and sis may get a little weird.  However, you can always pair up a Princess Leia costume with a Han Solo outfit since they were actually married in the Star Wars story line.  

Moving along—in the chronological order of the film releases—Anakin Skywalk and Padme Amidala were actually Luke and Leia’s biological parents.  This is another important couple from The Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith.  This is also one of Star Wars most important couples because their relationship gave way for a series of important in the story line; not to mention, Anakin turned out to be Darth Vader!  

Lastly, we have Finn and Rey, a newer but just as memorable Star Wars couple from The Force Awakens.  Finn, an ex-Stormtrooper who left the First order to join the Rebel Alliance and Rey, an independent scavenger who discovered she possessed “The Force,” went into uncharted territory together to carry on the storyline to the prequel of Star Wars: A New Hope.  Though there was speculation about the nature of their relationship in the film, all signs point to it being a friendly exchange.  But who’s to say that it won’t develop into something more in future films?  You can dress up as Finn and Rey and turn the relationship into anything you want. 

TV Show Couples Costumes 

Like the movies, classic TV shows are a great platform for couples’ costumes.  It’s hard to think of a TV series that does not have a lovable couple; as a matter of fact, couples are very often the reason many shows exist in the first place.  From the days of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo to Homer and Marge Simpson, TV couples costumes have come a long way.  In our TV show costumes section, you can see examples like the Power Rangers and Star Trek costumes from the image above. The Flintstones

Teletubbies
