Costume Maketh the Superhero P. 2: Iconic Costumes
Howdy there, reader.
Remember how we were just talking about how costumes define a superhero the other day? I closed by promising you how we’d be taking a look at some of the most iconic superhero costumes of all time, and today we’re going to do just that.
Ready for an adventure?
Here we go!
10. The Fantastic 4

Josh Trank’s minor Fant4stic debacle aside, Marvel’s first family remains a formidable presence in the recognisability department.
You see a fancily written 4 on a moderate-to-highly fancy costume, and your brain instantly processes what it is.
Tobias Funke knows it all too well, if you catch my drift!
9. V.

V for Vendetta is a seminal piece of work, both as a graphic novel and as a film, thanks in no part to the fantastic Guy Fawkes mask that rounds out protagonist V’s costume.
Couple that with an actor of Hugo Weaving’s calibre playing him, and you’ve got an icon for the ages.
In fact, in recent times, the mask has become a symbol for rebellion against tyrannical oppression, something the crew are all too proud of.
8. Wonder Woman

The instance you see the warrior-like costume with its battle scarred shield, mighty sword, and heavy duty armor, you know it can only be one person, and one person alone – the Amazonian Princess Diana of Themyscira.
7. The X-Men

99% of the pop-culture aware population instantly thinks of the X-Men every time they see a, well, X somewhere (in addition to Wolverine, of course, who seems to be just about everywhere these days).
When it’s on a costume – be it Bryan Singer’s leather fetish version or the original material’s spandex – could the results be any different?
We rest our case.
6. The Flash

“My name is Barry Allen, and I’m the—“
We know, Barry, you don’t have to spell it out for us every time, that lightning bolt emblem on your costume is enough to remind us!
We already think of you every time the lightning strikes.
(or someone mentions timelines and why they should not be disrupted)
5. Iron Man

Iron Man’s popularity has gotten an arc-reactor powered boost in the last decade and turned his red and gold motif into one of the most widely recognized ones in the world.
No matter which of his 40-odd costumes he is wearing, the red and gold makes sure you don’t mistake him for someone else!
4. Captain America

Truth be told, it’s all in his costume. You turn one of the most recognizable flags in the world into a costume for the most patriotic man in the world (let’s just ignore the HYDRA bombshell for a minute here, okay?), give him a tool unlike any other to carry out his duty towards his country and if you still can’t make him memorable (or a source of constant memes, at least), well damn.
3. Spider-Man

Come on, you knew our boy Spidey was gonna make the podium!
His red and blue costume with its intricate webbing was, is and always will be the most unique costume to grace our pages and screens.
No matter which iteration you’re dealing with, Spider-Man is Spider-Man, and there ain’t no confusing him with someone else.
2. Superman

Yes sir, it’s the world’s greatest Boy Scout on number 2.
His red and blue costume with its trademark insignia has been around for way too long to remind you of anything else, especially with him being a fashion pioneer who had the genius idea of wearing his underwear inside out paired with a matching cape.
And you thought Tommy Hilfiger knew his designs!
1. Batman

Do we even need to say something? He’s the Batman, and that tells you all you need to know about him.
Having taken his fear of bats and turned it into a symbol of righteous justice, Batman’s costume is the definition of a costume done right – utilitarian, recognizable and well, snazzy.
That’s our list folks, with the 10 most recognizable costumes around!
Feel we missed someone?
Dress up as them and let us know!
We’ll see you on Halloween.
