The Costume Evolution of Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman, the name itself cheers us up with the excitement and lightens up the spirit of a comic enthusiast. A woman so brave and beautiful, bold and fierce, a true humanitarian and savior of the world, is always ready to take up a challenge. The lady has been adorned in colors of red and blue with stars on her ensemble, shines through in the battlefield.
Wonder Woman’s costume has always been appreciated, and this comic character form Justice League has been applauded for her attire. The signature look of Wonder Woman carries a shield like vest, a skirt to go with it, tiara with the star emblem, hand cuffs and boots to finish her look. Throughout the years, this superhero has gone through various style changes, retaining the key characteristics of her costume.

1941: The Amazonian princess’s first costume was designed by Harry G. Peter. Her attire carried the color scheme of bright red and white, with blue and gold. The signature elements of her costume consist of an armour vest, a skirt, a tiara, a pair of boots and bracelets. This color scheme was chosen to give the character a patriotic feel and connect with the readers. Also, the lasso (the powerful rope) is her favourite weapon in the comic
1942: Wonder Woman was soon spotted with a change where she transformed her skirt to skin tight shorts, keeping the print same. In addition to that, her boots were given a sleek design with white Jettison stripe at the rim.
1949: Wonder Woman’s costume was tweaked a bit where her shoes were changed from boots to gladiators. The strappy sandals tied in a criss-cross fashion were kept red, following the same color scheme.
1968: The era of 60’s was the time of a style renaissance for all the ladies. In such a period, how can the super heroine not keep up with the trend! The princess slipped into the shoes of a modern woman who performs martial arts instead of exercising her super powers. She played the character of an undercover as Diana Prince and dressed in white mostly!
1972-73: Wonder Woman returned to her original classic look (the Red and Blue Costume) and restored her superpowers.
1982: Something very special happened to the character. This super heroine was bestowed with her own logo, embedded on her armor. This logo became a distinguishing factor. The logo was easily identifiable and set her apart from her counterparts, Batman and Superman.
1987: Wonder Woman was given a makeover with flowy, black and curly hair with her tiara pointed at both sides. The color of the bracelets was changed to silver.
1995: Wonder Woman got a completely revamped look with a bondage biker look. This Amazonian princess donned this look with utmost panache. But the signature print of stars was retained on her jacket.
2006: Wonder Woman again comes back to the previous look with slightly furnished details. The breastplate brought back the previous logo of Eagle and Wonder Woman. Also, the shorts were skimpy tight and the tiara was shining on her head gracefully. Also, she was back with the signature red boots of hers. Such a beauty!
2010: Wonder Woman was given a sporty look with pants. Shocking right? Everything was changed. From boots to tiara to her attire, everything was refreshed. But, the tiara and her gauntlets were retained. The look ensured that the super heroine can do a tough job when it comes to dealing with the baddies out there!
2011: Wonder Woman was re-introduced with her previous look, that is, the armor and the shorts, but this time, her costume was embellished with silver accents instead of gold.The entire look was a slightly gothic version of her signature look.
2016: This was THE moment for the beautiful actress Gal Gadot, who essays the role of Wonder Woman in the Justice League movies. Since the character was highly glorified in the movie, there were some changes in the costume. The shorts were replaced by a Greek inspired skirt. She was also provided with a cape. The gold rims on her costume was back. her costume emanated a shine. There was another costume which was an all gold costume. The costume was tried by Wonder Woman in 'Dawn of Justice' and 'Justice League'.
Wonder woman is an inspirational character for all the readers. The headstrong, courageous legend is willing to sacrifice her life for the sake of humankind. Costumes are an integral part of super heroes as it becomes the sign of recognition. With the lasso and sword up her sleeves, she is ready to fight the enemies.
