Wondering what ancient Greek fashion was like for a woman? Women in Greece were often seen wearing long white flowy dresses with long shawls. They also wore scarves around their body to protect themselves from the elements. This was your typical middle class outfit, paired with a set of sturdy sandals with tones to match their cloths. Peasants were not so fortunate, even in artistic depictions and sculptures, Greek peasants were shown wearing ragged clothes with just enough fabric to cover their body. Royal on the other hand, were seen clad in beautiful golden jewelry, accessories and even golden high sandals. Special pendants around their necks indicated their social status, as if the rest of their glamorous looks were not already doing so. Red and white fabrics made from a quality silk or cotton gave their appearance and extra push of elegance that even today, is recognized as historic fashion.
Greek fashion for men was very similar but more simplistic. High ranking politicians wore long robes which dragged along the floor as they would make their way through the halls of temples and senate buildings. Just like the women, male peasants had the bare essentials unless they were soldiers. Greek soldiers were
provided with metallic armor which they wore over plain tunics. These pieces were completed with a leather kilt, sandals, a helmet, and of course, the necessary war instruments—shield and sword. Greek costumes are some of the most true-to-history fashion replicas. If you are considering a Greek costume for Halloween or any costumed event, there are plenty of options to make a wise decision.
