Detective Pikachu is Solving Crimes!

The new Detective Pikachu movie follows the protagonist Tim Goodman in trying to figure out his father’s disappearance. Along the way Tim meets a strange Pikachu, that speaks human language -- but the catch is only he can understand him, and together they begin trying to solve the disappearance of Tim’s father. While the main series has Pokemon that can easily communicate with humans, like Team Rocket’s Meowth, this is still an extreme rarity in the Pokemon universe. If you happen to be out of the loop on this whole Pokemon business, here is a quick catch-up: Pikachu is the primary mascot character for the most popular franchise in the world, Pokemon. Pokemon originally began as an adventure RPG video game franchise on Nintendo’s Gameboy. Developed by Game Freak studios, Pokemon Red and Blue first hit the US market in 1998, creating an instant craze. Soon after, Pokemon, the animated series jumped to US screens and kids everywhere fell in love with Ash Ketchum and Pikachu.

Pokemon can seem a bit overwhelming to get into or understand with its 122 games, anime, comics, animated movies, and now its first live-action movie, but if we get to the core of it, it is actually quite simple to follow along. The main content for the franchise is coming out of the handheld RPG games, which come out approximately every year. From here, the comics and the anime create a season which loosely follows the topics of that year’s game, but with Ash Ketchum and Pikachu as the protagonists (the rest of Ash’s party changes depending on the season). Additionally, spin-off games will usually feature Pokemon as the protagonists, like the Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon spin offs, or the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu game. Nintendo knows that the fan’s biggest pull to Pokemon are the adorable pocket monsters and have given them tons of attention, as well as releasing new ones every generation! Did you know there are currently 809 pokemon? We’re a long way from the original 151 that debuted in Pokemon Red and Blue! (if you’re curious, Pikachu is number 25.)

Now that you’re all caught up, we can start getting excited for the newly released adaptation of Detective Pikachu. Detective Pikachu got the ball rolling right on opening weekend by breaking Tomb Raider’s record of $47.7 million by opening at $54.3 million. While it makes complete sense, with Pokemon being one of the best-selling franchises we’ve seen in the past 20 years, fans were beyond excited, as video game adaptations are known to be low earning, and unfortunately often times disappointing. Veteran fans and new fans alike were treated to the amazing experience of a universe where Pokemon are as mundane and normal as dogs and cats. Since the surprise in this Pokemon movie isn’t the existence of Pokemon, our shake up comes from… a talking Pikachu! This Pikachu even has a job, he’s a detective! Voiced by Ryan Reynolds, the concept of a talking Pikachu that only the protagonist can understand creates a fun and comical atmosphere, where we get to see Reynolds deep voice as the titular adorable furry Pikachu. And this is contrasted by the classic whodunnit storyline. 

So why is the new Detective Pikachu movie so great it’s breaking records? Well, for starters, Pokemon is quite literally the highest grossing franchise, estimated at $90 billion across all its media. So, we know the Detective Pikachu movie was going to attract a lot of people. This is also the first live-action Pokemon movie, and out of all those fans, many want to know exactly how they rendered their favorites into 3D. Beyond that, well, are you saying you don’t want to watch the voice of Ryan Reynolds on the body of a fluffy electric yellow rat solve crimes?
