Could The New Power Rangers’ Costumes Add A Different Tone To The Franchise?

By Esteban CeperoIt’s morphin time! Just recently, Lionsgate released an all-new photo from the upcoming Power Rangers film showing another look at the team in their new costumes. For most fans, these photos are really building up the anticipation and the hype for the film, but some are still questionable on how the success of the reboot will turn out in the future. There’s still a ton of high hopes for the film, with the cast looking great; as Bryan Cranston is portraying Zordon and Elizabeth Banks cast as Rita Repulsa, we’re going to see an awesome performance from these actors.

The Power Rangers franchise was a huge win in the past, especially the Power Rangers’ costumes. Let’s all admit it, we’ve dressed in Red Ranger costumes once or twice for Halloween. The franchise is not only a major key in our childhoods but is simply iconic all around. Even if you’ve asked someone or mention something about Power Rangers to a person that wasn’t a big fan, they’ll most-likely know what you’re talking about. Now, the Power Rangers wasn’t exactly a show meant for adults or teens. It mostly aimed for a very young age group since it wasn’t taken as such a serious franchise. If we look back at it now, mostly in the 90’s, it seems quite cheesy, even some of the Power Rangers’ costumes. That doesn’t take away at how awesome it was, but we digged it most when we were younger, and at the time, Power Ranger costumes seemed to be a thing for kids. However, with the reboot coming around next year, it may seem quite different.

With just what we’ve seen, we’re looking at a whole new, and better quality team! The Power Rangers’ costumes look absolutely astonishing, even unmasked. It definitely looks more serious than previous Power Rangers costumes. The technology built in the suits seems quite different, if you take a look at the first photo shown of the team all together, they’re all masked with the tinted lenses and mouth coverings. In this new photo above that was released not too long ago, the team’s faces are completely shown even with their helmets on. Some theories can be made from this, the most popular theory is that their masks retract from their face into the helmet—unlike the one from the prior costumes. This would make sense and actually be a huge advantage for the Power Rangers, if they ever need to take a breather after combat without having to fully take their helmet off.
Other than the new technology of the costumes, just by looking at the photo, we may be seeing a whole new tone to the franchise. The high quality of the costumes by itself, shows that the new team isn’t going to be taken as a joke. There’s a decent amount of intensity being shown as we see the Power Rangers ready for battle and looking upon their enemy, which in this case could be Rita Repulsa. With us being able to look at each of the Power Rangers’ faces, it’s going to give each actor a major chance to use their own acting skills and show more emotion in the upcoming film. Which is why the franchise seems to be going for a different and more mature tone, and this is reflected in the style of their costumes. This doesn’t mean that the target audience will be based on adults, but it does show that it will reach out to those that loved and remember the franchise in the past and to kids who enjoy it now.

I mean, no matter how well, or how bad this film may seem, it’s definitely an improvement. We’ve barely seen anything yet, let’s not judge it too much; a trailer hasn’t even been released, which hopefully happens soon—to reveal a little bit more of the new tone and new costumes. These young actors have something to offer next year on the big screen and I can’t wait to see it all go down! The Power Rangers film morphs into theaters on March 24, 2017! Surely, Power Ranger costumes from the new film will be a hit that year. For now, let's celebrate with the classics.
