The Choicest Costumes for Pixar Lovers This Halloween
In today’s world, it’s harder than ever to be immune to criticism with everyone being a critic and having a medium to voice their opinion.
It is, then, nothing short of a curiosity to find Pixar Studios consistently garnering universal acclaim with everything they do. Pixar, if you haven’t heard of them (not likely, but still), is an American animation studio and a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios that is best known for making transcendent animated films that bring tears to your eyes, a smile on your face, and more often than not, an absurdly large box office take with a few Academy Awards. It's not only children; Pixar has captured the hearts of adults as well.
Think of the best animated film you ever saw.
I bet you Pixar made it.
It’s easy to think of Pixar as a studio that merely makes movies for children, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Pixar’s appeal is arguably greater among adults, and if you don’t believe me, just count the number of adults in Pixar costumes this Halloween and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
The reason Pixar costumes and merchandise sell out as fast as they do, is directly tied into the quality of their films and the quality of their animation (their character models translate really well into a costume).
For the Pixar fans out there, I decided to round up some of the best costumes they can find this Halloween so that they can be bring their favorite characters to life!
1. The Incredibles Costumes
A lot of people claim that The Incredibles is their favorite Pixar film, and you can’t really argue with them. The film has possibly everything you need, from snazzy animation, to cool costumes (complete with a hilarious costume montage) and great characters.
In a lot of ways, this is the Fantastic 4 film we deserved, but never got.
Apparently Disney heard our lamenting, because after years and years, a sequel to the film has finally been greenlit, and with that announcement in place, I expect the Incredibles section of the costume market to go into a superpowered frenzy.
These characters always had cool costumes which sold well, and with the recent announcements, the demand for the costumes is expected to skyrocket, so you’d do well to get yourself one now while you have the time.
2. Inside Out Costumes
Just as The Incredibles is a favorite among the Pixar fans, so is Inside Out, and personally I’d argue the latter is the better film. Inside Out had heart, warmth, and pulled on the feels in a manner that made adults (including the Academy members apparently, from all those Oscars) cry.
The film also benefited from having some amazing characters (who thought emotions would make such great characters?) and while the film might be over a year old, the fervor surrounding it hasn’t died down.
You can still find someone in an Anger costume, a Disgust costume or a Joy costume on just every corner and why shouldn’t you?
These are great characters with terrific designs and costumes and they should get the love they deserve.
I don’t see the love for Inside Out winding down any time soon, so expect more of these costumes this Halloween.
3. Nemo and Dory Costumes
Rounding out the trifecta of most beloved Pixar films is Finding Nemo (sorry, Up) and to some extent, Finding Dory.
While the former became a cultural zeitgeist based on its production values, story and script (but then you could say that about every Pixar film, it’s like they do this without even trying) the latter capitalized on nostalgia, Dory’s quirkiness and of course, the energy that Ellen DeGeneres brings to whatever role she’s in.
The character in both films are the standard Pixar affair, so you know they’ll be adorable, and if that’s the vibe you’re looking for, you’d do well to go with either the Nemo costume, or the Dory costume, because hey, who doesn’t like a talking fish with amnesia, right?
4. Toy Story Costumes
A lot of today’s younger audience isn’t familiar with the Toy Story films, but these were the films that got the whole Pixar business up and running.
A sweet and simple tale about talking toys and growing up, the older audience stands by Toy Story as the greatest Pixar, or even animated film ever made (not surprised, Steve Jobs himself had a hand in production) and the sheer number of adults you see wearing a Woody costume or a Buzz Lightyear costume is testament to that.
This film has gotten better with age.
Bonus Mention—Cars
Personally, I don’t feel either of the Cars movies are Pixar’s strongest points, but they’re good looking, and their costumes are popular among younger viewers, so there’s that.
